This report presents a summary of reading research in the early grades in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan. The overarching goal of this report is to assist the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to design a new regional project for the enhancement of early reading skills among students in grades one to four in the two countries. The USAID Mission in the Central Asian Republics (USAID/CAR) contracted with the Aguirre Division of JBS International, Inc. to implement the research study, which included two components: 1. Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA): A quantitative oral assessment of reading skills of 4,228 students in grades two to four in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan. 2. Qualitative research study: A qualitative review of current pedagogical practices and materials related to early grade reading in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan.
