The Missing Genre: Creating Quality Non-fiction Books for the Early Grades (CIES 2018)
This presentation shares best practices in developing nonfiction texts in low-resourced contexts, sharing examples from Room to Read's experience developing 30 nonfiction titles in Tanzania. The best practices that are discussed include engaging subject specialists from the ministry of education, fostering a development collaboration between local writers, editors and designers, establishing design templates for nonfiction texts, and designing effective workshops. The benefits and challenges of connecting nonfiction texts to the curriculum are also discussed. This was presentation at the annual conference of the Comparative International Education Society (CIES) in Mexico City, Mexico.
