Global Reading Network Webinar Set for October 25

The Global Reading Network’s popular webinar series resumes on Wednesday, October 25, with a program on “Assessing Oral Language, Reading Comprehension and Spelling Skills: Complements to the Early Grade Reading Assessment.” The webinar will take place from 10:00 - 11:00 AM (EDT).

The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) is an open-source tool that measures some of the foundational skills needed for literacy acquisition. During the 10 years that EGRA has been used—in more than 100 languages and 70 countries, by more than 50 organizations—it has been useful in measuring primary students' progress toward fluent reading, particularly in low-income country contexts. EGRA findings have in turn identified a need to gather more nuanced information about other basic literacy skills.

In this webinar, Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Dubeck and Dr. Jonathan Stern from RTI International will present the results from a pilot study designed to identify new ways to measure students' oral language, reading comprehension and writing skills. They will describe the four new tasks developed to complement EGRA and share findings from the pilot (conducted by RTI International with funding from the United States Agency for International Development). They also will discuss how these measures of early grade reading can be used to monitor students' progress and the impact of early grade reading programs.
