Early Grade Reading Activity: Malawi

This program is designed to improve the capacity of Grade 1-3 teachers to provide quality reading instruction to students.  In addition to improving the learning outcomes of students, the program will increase parental and community engagement to support student reading, and reduce the repetition and dropout rates in early grades by providing a quality learning environment.

The program is part of a U.S. Agency for International Development-funded consortium working with the Malawi Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology to develop lesson plans in Chichewa, English, and vernacular languages; print, procure, and distribute teaching and learning materials in all these languages; deliver training to teachers and head teachers; mobilize community support for school-based activities; and help develop education policy.
