Abstract (200 Character Limit) :

This resource includes presentations and materials provided at the workshop "Early Grade Reading Program Design and Implementation: Best Practices and Resources for Success." The workshop took place March 25, 2018, at the annual conference of the Comparative International Education Society (CIES) in Mexico, City, Mexico. The content was developed through the Reading within Reach (REACH) initiative on behalf of the Global Reading Network, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The resources are appropriate for anyone designing and implementing an early grade reading program, particularly in a low-resource context. The materials cover the following topics:

  • Key reading skills children need to learn and stages of reading development;
  • Evidence-based pedagogical approaches and strategies for teaching reading and writing in the early grades;
  • Commonly used materials for effectively teaching EGR, and how they can be developed and used;
  • Core components of teacher professional development for early grade reading programs;
  • What coaching is, what effective coaching looks like, and how to train and support coaches;
  • How to use data and other information to guide EGR program design and implementation; and
  • How to plan for early grade reading program scale-up and sustainability.

Each presentation includes a summary of research and best practices, examples from early grade reading programs, and a compilation of related resources and tools.
