Intended for anyone involved in education where children’s mother tongue is not used in school.  It will be particularly useful to local, district and provincial education officials, as well as school principals, teachers and education programme staff in non-governmental organisations.  This guide will help you to: 1)  raise language issues with others and put forward the case for a better approach, based on strong evidence, 2) understand how to introduce a better language approach in the schools you work with, 3) issue guidance for making language changes in schools to help children learn, 4) guide schools in managing parents’ expectations, so that demands for education in national or foreign languages can be dealt with constructively.
